Decades of Changing Wedding Dress Designs
The 1950s
Bridal fashion in the 1950s was unique in that it seemed to focus more on the bride’s accessories than the dress she wore. Hemlines were brought up slightly, placing more emphasis on her shoes, and veils were also designed to be shorter. Brides often wore dainty tulle, lace, or satin gloves, and delicate headpieces and hats were often an essential part of her wedding day splendor.
The 1960s and 1970s
Carrying over from the 1950s, shorter hemlines stuck around in the 1960s and gradually started getting longer into the 1970s. Empire waistlines were very common during this time period, giving many brides that desirable high-waisted appearance. Brides continued to wear delicate headpieces and bouffant veils, but they also began incorporating pill-box hats into their bridal attire.
The 1980s
We all remember the 1980s as a time of excess, and the world of bridal fashion was not immune to this “bigger is better” mentality. During this decade, many brides opted for oversized bouquets, full-length veils, and long cathedral-style trains. Many wedding gowns featured long, flowing sleeves, and many times, the sleeves were gathered at the wrist with some sort of ornate edging.
The 1980s and 2000s
Following the overly ornate bridal designs of the 1980s, women of the 1990s and 2000s were ready to simplify matters a bit. During this time period, dress silhouettes became more narrow, and sculpted bodices began to make an appearance. Additionally, off-the-shoulder and strapless wedding dress designs gained in popularity, as did a combination of vintage patterns made from modern materials — a nod to traditional styles in ever-changing times.
Modern Wedding Dress Designs
Today, it seems as though modern wedding dress design has taken a little bit of something from every decade past to create stunning gowns that are both timeless and fashion-forward. Strapless, floor-length gowns with sweetheart necklines and ornate lace overlays are popular choices for many brides, as are shorter, tea-length wedding gowns with incredibly ornate headpieces and oversized bouquets. No matter which type of wedding dress design appeals to you, Christopher Paunil can help you create a dress that allows you to feel comfortable and confident on your big day.
